How the Viking Ocean Cruises military discount works

We start with the lowest fare Viking is currently offering for your ship, date and stateroom category, including any promotion the line is running. Our military discount of at least 5% then comes off the cruise fare portion of that price. Taxes, port fees and air are not discounted, but everything else about the booking stays the same as if you had called Viking directly.

On select sailings, our membership in several large travel consortia adds extras such as onboard credit or other amenities. Those vary by departure, so we tell you exactly what applies to your voyage before you put down a deposit.

Who qualifies for the discount

Eligibility is broad. Active duty service members, retired military and all veterans qualify, regardless of branch or length of service. All military and veteran spouses qualify too, including surviving and divorced spouses.

Family and friends traveling with you receive the same discount, even in their own staterooms. Because Viking welcomes guests 18 and older only, this tends to work well for reunions of adult siblings, couples traveling together or a veteran celebrating a milestone with grown children.

What is included on a Viking ocean cruise

Viking's ocean ships carry roughly 930 guests, small enough to dock in many city-center ports and large enough to offer several restaurants and a full spa. The line is known for what it leaves out: there are no casinos, no children and no inside cabins. The atmosphere is quiet, Scandinavian in design and focused on the destination.

A good deal of the cost is already built into the fare, which makes comparing Viking with other luxury lines more favorable than the headline price suggests.

Viking expedition ships: Octantis and Polaris

Viking entered expedition cruising with twin ships, Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris, each carrying 378 guests and built to Polar Class 6 standards. They sail to Antarctica, the Arctic and the Great Lakes, and were designed to fit through the Welland Canal.

Both ships have an enclosed launch area called The Hangar, which holds Zodiacs, kayaks, special operations boats and two small submarines. An onboard science lab works with research partners including NOAA and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Our military discount applies to these expedition voyages the same way it does to Viking's ocean itineraries.
