What Is a Ship-Within-a-Ship Suite?

Mainstream lines have learned that many travelers want luxury service without giving up water slides, Broadway-style shows, dozens of restaurants or a ship the whole family enjoys. Their answer is a suite complex: a keycard-only area with its own lounge, sundeck and often a private restaurant, staffed by butlers or concierges.

You get a quiet retreat when you want one and the full resort ship when you do not. For multigenerational trips, it can also be a way to treat grandparents to a suite while the rest of the family books regular cabins nearby.

Comparing the Major Suite Programs

Each line packages its suite experience a little differently. These are the well-established features of each program.

• NCL The Haven: a private courtyard with pool and sundeck, The Haven Lounge and The Haven Restaurant, plus butler service, a concierge and priority embarkation.
• MSC Yacht Club: the Top Sail Lounge with forward views, a private restaurant, a private pool deck, round-the-clock butler and concierge service, and drinks included in Yacht Club fares.
• Royal Caribbean Royal Suite Class: three tiers. Sea Class adds suite comforts and dinner at Coastal Kitchen; Sky Class adds a concierge, the Suite Lounge and suite sundeck; Star Class adds a Royal Genie who plans your days, plus included drinks and specialty dining.
• Celebrity The Retreat: the suites-only Luminae restaurant, The Retreat Lounge, a private sundeck on newer ships, and a dedicated butler for every suite.
• Cunard Grills: Princess Grill and Queens Grill suites dine in their own restaurants and share the Grills Lounge and Grills Terrace; Queens Grill guests also get a butler.
• Holland America Neptune Suites: access to the private Neptune Lounge with its own concierge, priority boarding and tendering, and complimentary laundry. Pinnacle Suites on newer ships add far more space.

Choosing Between Them

If you want the most ship-within-a-ship feel, The Haven and MSC Yacht Club are the most self-contained, with their own pools and restaurants. Royal Caribbean's Star Class delivers the most hands-on personal service through the Royal Genie, while Sky Class is a strong middle ground.

Celebrity's Retreat suits travelers who want a modern, upscale ship with a polished dining experience. Cunard Grills recreate a classic ocean-liner style, especially on transatlantic crossings aboard Queen Mary 2. Holland America's Neptune Suites appeal to travelers who prefer a calmer, mid-size ship and a dedicated concierge without a fully separate enclave.

Suite on a Big Ship or a Luxury Line?

Fares for top suites on mainstream ships can approach, or even pass, the price of a standard suite on a true luxury line. A luxury line includes more across the whole ship and offers a more intimate atmosphere, while a big-ship suite offers more variety, more entertainment and a family-friendly setting.

How the Luxury Suite Cruise Military Discount Works

We start with the cruise line's lowest available suite fare, including current promotions, and take at least 5% off the cruise fare. On select sailings we can also add onboard credit or other amenities. The discount applies to the cruise fare, not to taxes, port fees or air.

Active duty, retirees, all veterans, and all military and veteran spouses qualify, along with family and friends traveling with them, even in separate cabins. We charge no fees, payments go directly to the cruise line, and we monitor your rate until final payment.
